What is Atmosphere?

Atmosphere means the air around us.

The atmosphere is a blanket of air that surrounds our Earth.
It protects us, gives us oxygen to breathe, and keeps Earth warm.

👉 Atmosphere = the layer of air around Earth

Layers of the Atmosphere (with height)

From the ground up, the atmosphere has 5 main layers:

1. Troposphere (0 – 12 km)

  • This is the lowest layer
  • We live here
  • All weather (rain, clouds, wind) happens here

2. Stratosphere (12 – 50 km)

  • Contains the ozone layer
  • The ozone layer protects us from harmful sunlight
  • Airplanes fly here sometimes

3. Mesosphere (50 – 85 km)

  • This is the coldest layer
  • Meteors (shooting stars) burn here

4. Thermosphere (85 – 600 km)

  • Very hot layer
  • Satellites move here
  • Northern lights happen here

5. Exosphere (600 km and above)

  • The outermost layer
  • It slowly fades into space
